PR After Biometrics in Canada: What Happens Next

Giving your biometrics means your application is moving, but it isn't the last step and it isn't an approval. After biometrics, IRCC still has to finish your medical, eligibility and background checks before it can make a decision.

There's no set number of days from biometrics to PR. Timelines you see online are other people's cases, and yours can be very different. The official figure is in IRCC's processing times tool.

The usual stages after biometrics

These are the typical stages. The order can vary, and some can happen at the same time.

StageWhat's happening
Biometrics completedYour fingerprints and photo are on file
Medical examIRCC reviews your results
Eligibility reviewAn officer checks that you meet your program's rules, including your work, education and funds
Background and security checksCriminal and security checks, which can take longer for some people
Final decisionIRCC makes a decision
Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)If you're approved, you get the documents to complete your landing

You may also get a request for more documents, or a procedural fairness letter if an officer has concerns.

How to check your progress

Sign in to your IRCC secure account, and consider the Application status tracker, which may show more detail for permanent residence applications. You need your unique client identifier (UCI) and application number. See how to check your IRCC application status.

What can slow things down

  • A reference letter that doesn't match your job duties
  • Police certificates or medical results that need follow-up
  • A change you didn't report, such as a new job, a marriage or a baby
  • An address or name mismatch
  • A security or background check, which you usually can't speed up

Report changes through your account. Keep your passport, language test details and contact information current.

Biometrics basics

  • Fee: $85 for one person, or a maximum of $170 for a family applying together.
  • Who's exempt: children under 14, and applicants over 79, among others.
  • Your instruction letter tells you what to do and when. Give them at a Visa Application Centre or other approved location before the deadline in your letter.

Can you work or travel while you wait?

If you're in Canada and your status is ending, act early. You may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit, and maintained status can help if you apply to extend before your permit expires.

Talk to someone before you travel, especially if your status depends on being in Canada.

FAQs

How long does PR take after biometrics?

There's no fixed time. Check IRCC's processing times tool for your program, and remember it counts from when you submitted your complete application, not from your biometrics.

Does giving biometrics mean I'm approved?

No. It only means your identity information is on file. IRCC still has to finish reviewing your application.

Can my application be refused after biometrics?

Yes. A refusal can come at any stage if you don't meet the rules or you're found inadmissible.

Do I need to do anything after biometrics?

Usually just wait, keep your account details current and reply quickly to any request from IRCC.
