Types of Express Entry draws
IRCC runs several kinds of draws. Your chance of an invitation depends on which draws you are eligible for, not only your score.
General (all-program) draws
Open to every candidate in the pool who qualifies for CEC, FSW or FST. These often have the highest cut-offs.
Program-specific draws
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): only candidates who qualify for CEC. Common in recent years.
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): only candidates with a provincial nomination. Cut-offs are high because the nomination adds 600 points, but anyone with a nomination is almost always invited.
- Federal Skilled Trades (FST): less common.
Category-based draws
For candidates with specific skills or work experience. Cut-offs are often lower than general draws. IRCC's current categories:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services
- STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)
- Trades
- Education
- Transport
- Physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience
- Skilled military recruits
To be eligible for most work-based categories, you need at least 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in an eligible occupation in the last 3 years. It doesn't have to be continuous.

How to read a draw result
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| ITAs | Invitations to Apply sent in the draw |
| CRS cut-off | The lowest score that received an invitation |
| Tie-breaking rule | If several people had the cut-off score, only those who created their profile before this date and time were invited |
| Draw type | Who was eligible: everyone, one program, or one category |
Example (made-up numbers): A CEC draw with a cut-off of 500 means every CEC-eligible candidate with 500 or more was invited, plus those with exactly 500 who submitted their profile before the tie-break time.
How often are Express Entry draws held?
IRCC usually holds draws every one to three weeks, often several in the same week with different types. There is no fixed schedule and IRCC does not announce draws in advance. Draw sizes and types follow IRCC's yearly immigration levels plan.
Be careful with "predictions." No one outside IRCC knows when the next draw will happen or what the cut-off will be. Base your plans on your own score and eligibility.
My score is below the cut-off. What can I do?
- Check category-based draws. If you work in healthcare, STEM, trades, education or transport, or speak French, you may be invited with a lower score.
- Raise your language score. CLB 9 in all four skills is often the biggest jump.
- Add French. NCLC 7 adds up to 50 points.
- Apply for a PNP. A nomination adds 600 points. Try the BC PNP calculator.
- Gain more Canadian experience. Each year adds points.
- Update your profile. Any change in your favour should be added right away.
