Work Permit Extension in Canada: When to Apply and What You Need

Apply to extend your work permit before it expires, and ideally at least 30 days before. If you apply on time, you may be able to keep working under the same conditions while IRCC decides. If you apply one day late, you lose that protection.

Who can extend, and how

Your permitWhat you usually need
Employer-specificA job with the employer that still meets the program's rules. Many need a new LMIA or an LMIA-exempt offer
OpenTo still qualify for an open permit, such as a spousal open work permit
PGWPA PGWP generally can't be extended. See your options after the PGWP
Bridging open work permitYou've applied for PR and meet the rules. See our BOWP guide

You must apply from inside Canada, and your passport must cover the period you ask for. A permit can't run past your passport's expiry date, so renew your passport early if you need to.

When you need a new permit, even if yours is valid

You need to apply if you hold an employer-specific permit and:

  • your job is extended
  • your pay or responsibilities change
  • you're offered a different job
  • you want to work for a new employer

You can't start a different job or work for a new employer until you have the new permit. Starting early can count as unauthorized work.

Fees

ItemFee (CAD)
Work permit, including extensions$155
Open work permit holder fee, if applicable$100
Biometrics, if required$85
Restore status with a new work permit$401.25

Check IRCC's fee list when you pay.

Can you work while you wait?

If you applied before your permit expired and stay in Canada, you have maintained status:

  • You can keep working under the same conditions: same employer, same job and same location if your permit is employer-specific.
  • Keep your submission confirmation to show your employer.
  • If you leave Canada, you lose maintained status.

What if your permit already expired?

You may be able to restore your status within 90 days, but you can't work until you get your new permit. After 90 days, your options are much more limited, so get advice quickly.

How long will it take?

Check IRCC's processing times tool, which has a figure for work permits from inside Canada. It changes often. Since maintained status only applies if you apply on time, don't wait for a good moment.

Common mistakes

  • Applying too late, or assuming your employer did it for you
  • Using the wrong LMIA or job details for the new period
  • Changing jobs before the new permit arrives
  • A passport expiring soon, which can shorten your new permit
  • Not including every required document, which can lead to a return or refusal

Thinking about PR?

A work permit is temporary. If you have 1 year of skilled Canadian work, look at the Canadian Experience Class and the BC PNP. Since November 3, 2026, work in a high-wage occupation can also add CRS points.

FAQs

How early can I apply to extend my work permit?

IRCC recommends at least 30 days before it expires. Check that you have what you need, such as a valid LMIA, before you apply.

Can I extend my work permit if I've applied for PR?

You may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit, if you meet the conditions. An ordinary extension may also be possible if your job qualifies.

Can I travel while my extension is in process?

If you leave Canada, you lose maintained status, and you can't work until your new permit is approved. Get advice before you travel.

Can my employer apply for me?

Your employer handles the LMIA or offer of employment where needed, but the work permit application is yours. You're responsible for your own status.
