The rule in short
| Who | Eligible work permit holders that IRCC notifies |
| How long | Up to 6 months, or until your permit ends, whichever comes first |
| What for | Short-term licensing, education or training |
| Full-time studies | Still need a study permit |
| In effect until | December 31, 2027 |
| New way to come to Canada? | No. It's for workers already here |
How do you know if you're eligible?
IRCC said in September 2026 that it would begin notifying eligible work permit holders. So:
- Check your IRCC account and the email address on your file for a notice.
- Keep any notice you receive, and give your school a copy if it asks.
- If you have no notice, don't assume you're covered. Get advice before enrolling.
The announcement mentions tradespeople, nurses and laboratory technicians as examples, but it doesn't publish a full list in the notice itself.
What this doesn't change
- Your work permit conditions stay the same. You still have to work only as your permit allows.
- Your permit's end date stays the same. The 6 months stop when your permit ends.
- Full-time study still needs a study permit.
- Other rules still apply, such as your school's and your regulator's requirements.
Could it help your PR plans?
Possibly, in an indirect way. Finishing a licence or certification may help you:
- qualify for a job in a regulated field, such as a certified trade or health care
- fit a BC PNP Care or Build group, many of which need a registration or certificate
- qualify for a category-based Express Entry draw
Short training doesn't automatically add CRS points, though. Only credentials that meet IRCC's rules count. If your credential is from outside Canada, you need an Educational Credential Assessment.
Other ways to study while working
Some short courses don't require a study permit at all. Courses of 6 months or less often fall into that group. If you're not sure about your course, check IRCC's rules on who needs a study permit, or ask us.
FAQs
Can I study full-time on a work permit?
Not under this measure. IRCC says full-time studies still need a study permit.
Do I need to apply for this?
IRCC says it's removing the study permit step for those eligible, and that it's notifying them. Keep your notice.
Can I bring family from abroad under this measure?
No. IRCC says it's not a new pathway to come to Canada.
What happens after December 31, 2027?
IRCC describes it as time-limited and it's in effect until that date. Check IRCC's notices closer to the time.
