Express Entry without a job offer

Yes, you can get permanent residence through Express Entry without a job offer. A job offer isn't required for any of the three programs Express Entry manages, as long as you meet the program's minimum rules. Most invitations go to candidates ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

ProgramJob offer needed? What you need instead
Canadian Experience ClassNo1 year of skilled Canadian work experience in the last 3 years
Federal Skilled Worker ProgramNo1 year of skilled work, CLB 7, an ECA for foreign education, proof of funds and 67 points
Federal Skilled Trades ProgramA job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification2 years of trade experience and the language minimums

How you're ranked without an offer

Once you're in the pool, IRCC ranks you by your CRS score out of 1,200. Without a job offer, your score comes from:

  • Core factors: age, education, language and Canadian work experience
  • Spouse factors, if your partner is coming with you
  • Skill transferability: combinations like strong language plus a degree or foreign work
  • Additional points: a provincial nomination (600), strong French, Canadian education or a sibling in Canada

Check your number with our CRS calculator, which uses the November 3, 2026 rules.

When a job offer helps from November 3, 2026

From November 3, 2026, a qualifying job offer in an IRCC high-wage occupation can add 50, 70 or 100 points, and it doesn't need an LMIA. If you don't have an offer, Canadian experience in a high-wage occupation can earn extra points instead. Read our Express Entry 2026 changes guide for the full rules.

How to compete without a job offer

  1. Raise your language score. It affects core, spouse and transferability points. Our CLB converter shows what each band is worth.
  2. Add French. Strong French earns extra points and qualifies you for French-language draws.
  3. Look at a provincial nomination. A nomination adds 600 points. See our Provincial Nominee Program guide.
  4. Check the category draws. Work in healthcare, trades and other categories can lead to lower cut-offs.
  5. Get every credential assessed. An ECA for each degree can add education points.
